Although automating production is not in itself Lean manufacturing, the Lean process can be an inherent part of such operations. Automation can reduce waste, whether from idle spindle time, lost time during set-up or for loading and unloading work pieces. By implementing Lean practices in combination with automation, resourceful manufacturers can successfully compete by seeking new manufacturing opportunities. Smith as president of SICK Ltd. in Canada.
