Metalworking Production & Purchasing
Southern Cross takes flight with Haas
Read more...SURREY, BC- Many people in the Vancouver area feel that Southern Cross Machining is the leading small-parts fabricator in the lower mainland. Loyal clients rave (and even a few competitors concede) that it’s arguably the most respected job shop in British Columbia. Apparently, the reputation is well earned.
With a sharp eye on quality production, efficient workflow and smart machine utilization, this busy shop consistently turns out exacting, tight-tolerance work-on time and in spec.
For nearly two decades, an enviable parade of high-end customers seeking precision parts has relied on Southern Cross to deliver; and these very particular purchasers haven’t been disappointed. But surprisingly, in the last few years, the label “Most Demanding Customer” has been pinned on the shop owner himself.
In a number of interesting ways, this business is far from the ordinary. The name on the building-“Southern Cross” (borrowed from the Southern Hemisphere’s version of the Big Dipper)-should be the first giveaway of the shop’s heritage.

Growing pains eased with automation

CALGARY, AB - Three main rules for success in the real estate market are said to be: location, location, location. And that same maxim could also apply to the dramatic success of Grant Metal Products Ltd., a custom manufacturer of sheet metal products for the construction, glazing, and signage industries, which found itself in the middle of the construction boom in Calgary, AL.
Grant Metal was founded by Bill Grant and his wife Jean in 1980. Through the years, the company has evolved to become the supplier of choice for a growing list of customers who require high quality, consistent precision-made sheet metal components in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and customers who supply products around the world. During this time, the company has grown from three to 22 employees and today is housed in a facility that provides 31,000 sq. ft. for production, equipment operation, storage, and project management.  Grant Metal fabricates mainly light gauge material for its customers - everything from 26 gauge to 1/4 in. steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel.
The company attributes its continued growth to its ability to respond to new business opportunities and the willingness to try new things.  "We have continually diversified our services," explains General Manager John Reitmeier.

Arrow hits the mark with laser cutting system
Read more...by Jerry Cook
TORONTO, ON - In 2004, Gary Gosse, owner and general manager of Arrow Sheet Metal Ltd. realized that he had to find a more efficient and cost effective method of making parts.
"I'm not a fan of outsourcing. If you outsource work, you lose control of delivery, price, and quality. I like to maintain control of what we're making," says Gosse.
Continues Gosse, "We had a lot of parts that we were making the hard way. As a result, most of the parts that could have been done on a laser were actually done in-house using other methods.
"It got to the point that there were  too many jobs that we were doing the hard way and we had to explore laser cutting. There were many parts that were tailor-made for a laser system to do the job."
Gosse's exploration of laser cutting subsequently led the company to install a PRIMA DOMINO laser cutting system.
